Victory! Rights And Responsibility's
After the British
accepted defeat the Treaty of Paris was signed. “The preliminary articles of
peace were signed by Adams, Franklin, Jay, and Henry Laurens for the United
States and Richard Oswald for Great Britain on November 30, 1782. The final
treaty was signed on September 3, 1783, and ratified by the Continental
Congress early in 1784.” As for the United States it agreed to use its powers
to end the persecution of Loyalists by state and local governments and to
restore their property confiscated during the war. Both countries agreed not to
block creditors from seeking to recover debts owed to them. So what were America’s new responsibilities as its own
independent country? America had already worked half way through getting “set
up” on being a fully working country. America had a Declaration of
Independence, an army, and citizen rights, and congress. All they needed was a
King. In 1789, 69 members of Congress cast their votes to elect George
Washington the first president of the United States. Washington at first was
supposed to be king so why did he turn that down and become a president? Well
after he had won the war they needed someone to run the country, of course he
would be the perfect fit after all he had done more than enough for his
country. Often people to this day call him the father of America. He decided
not to become king because he thought that America would turn into something
like Britain and he didn’t want to plague his country which he had fought and
worked so hard for.
